Updating via USB

Step 1: Request an Update File

  1. Email sentinel-support@conservationxlabs.org with the subject line “USB Update Request” requesting a bundled USB update file. The email should contain the information below:

    1. Firmware Version: Either release or alpha. Release is the stable version of the firmware. Alpha is the newest version of the firmware, but it may contain bugs.

    2. Cycle Time: How often you want the Sentinel to wake up.

    3. Trigger Number: How many pictures are required to wake up the Sentinel before the set Cycle Time. The default Trigger Number is 30.

    4. Requested Model:

      1. Two Stage or One Stage model?

      2. Model ID(s)?

      3. Any classes you want the Sentinel to ignore?

      4. If you don’t know the answer to the above questions, feel free to mention that in this request email and we can work with you to get the model you want.

Step 2: Transfer the Update to USB

  1. Sentinel Support will send you a compressed update file.

  2. Download the file and extract it to a USB flash drive (FAT32 format).

  3. Plug the USB into the Sentinel device.

Check if the update file was correctly transferred to the USB drive and make sure the USB drive is formatted as FAT32.

Step 3: Install the Update

  1. Turn the Sentinel off.

  2. Unplug the Spypoint from the Sentinel (not required, but removes a possible source of issues).

  3. Plug the USB into the Sentinel.

  4. Turn the Sentinel on.

  5. Wait for the LED indicators to blink blue/green, signaling the update process.

    1. If no flashing, then the device has firmware that is too old to update. The Sentinel will need to be brought in from the field for an update. Reach out to sentinel-support@conservationxlabs.org to get instructions on how to update these Sentinels.

    2. If flashing finishes with a solid blue light, then the update was successful. Wait for all lights to turn off, turn the Sentinel off, remove the USB, plug the spypoint cable into the Sentinel, and turn the Sentinel on.

    3. If flashing finishes with a solid green light, then the update has failed. Try again one more time. If it still fails, the Sentinel will need to be brought in from the field for an update. Reach out to sentinel-support@conservationxlabs.org to get instructions on how to update these Sentinels.

  6. Repeat with any number of Sentinels. The update bundle will remain on the USB and can be used an unlimited number of times.

  7. Because the update is completed in an offline state, the dashboard will not reflect the new settings.

Step 4: Finalize & Restart

  • Remove the USB drive.

  • Turn Sentinel off and back on.

  • Verify that the update was installed correctly.

USB updates allow offline firmware installation for Sentinels in the field.
